Stuck

Stuck in my brain are endless thoughts about what can and will go wrong with a Trump Administration. It is too late to blame anyone for Clinton's loss; it makes no difference whether it was caused by the FBI, or the Russian hacking, or the insipid portion of the American electorate. It is what it is.

And for the foreseeable future we are "stuck" with this President, perhaps for as long as four years.
Regardless of what happens he will inevitably take credit for any successes (caused by the rest of us) and decry any failures as the fault of his internal opponents (Republicans, Democrats, anyone who opposes him).

This is all happening because of our carelessness -- we were too lazy to vote, or we thought the "outcome was secure enough," or we just wanted to "stir the pot" to see what would happen. War could happen; nuclear proliferation could happen; more terrorism could happen; loss of our very own country and its government could happen; self-destruction could happen. And all because we were, in some way, careless and selfish with our own heritage.

We are now stuck!

A Bad Year Ends, a Bad Year Begins

2016 was the year of the Rise of Trump -- a man no one with a brain would want to be their President. But there it is. It was also the year of great migrations from war-torn or drug-ravaged lands: Sudan, Venezuela, Syria, Central Africa, Mexico, Columbia, Panama, et al. 2016 also brought us the brutality of ignorance, change for change's sake, and unrelenting stupidity and lies.

The political process broke down -- social media beat real media -- and mankind itself wavered in its  humanity. Selfishness replaced compassion; hate replaced love; anger replace common sense.

Women lost significant ground in reproductive rights, and control over their own bodies, their wages, their choices in life. And "crypto-fascism" became a "real thing."

2017 will probably not be a better year.

America in Chaos --Not an Easy Place to Be

The new "government" in America is either going to "drain the swamp" or become one. It will be filled with reprobate or retrobate but generally untrustworthy corporate magnates, disgruntled pundits, anti-status quo crazies, and conspiracy theorists -- all with no discernible governing ability. Many are rich, too rich, to understand or empathize with the rest of us. We will be treated like "specimens" in all phases of government: losers, non-billionaires, failures, excess --- all because we "did not win."

To a Capitalist/plutocratic/crypt--fascist regime we are all expendable. If we can't get health insurance, so what! If we can't pay for college; too bad! If we can't afford rent, or food, or insurance, or any of the normal pleasures in life --- it must be our own fault! It must be, because the "rich" have made it -- so something must be wrong with the rest of us. That's how life plays to a thick-brained plutocrat!

The Big Mistake?

Has America gone down the wrong path? Have we opted for greed over justice, profit over compassion? Have we given away our country's heritage to a capitalist moron? Are we in severe danger of becoming our "worst possible selves" in the next few years?

Is America in danger? Yes. Are we at risk of losing everything? Yes. Can we still stand up and resist the malevolent forces of selfishness? Can we rise above our base instincts, as our forefathers did, and continue to hold up the torch of freedom and justice for all the world to see?

We must be watchful; we must survive; we must take care of those who need our help. We are America, in spite of our mistakes.

What's Wrong With the Business Model -- for Everything!

There is no compassion in the business model -- refugees of war are simply "unintentional damages"; "collateral deaths." People and property are put at the same level -- with the edge going to "property": after all there are stockholders to consider!

My rights are always more important than your rights, particularly if I have the bigger pocketbook to defend my rights. You, just because you are at odds with me, are somehow deficient, wrong, strange, stupid, "a loser," or even just insane. How can you resist my plans -- they are "most" important.

Government exists to smooth the way for business -- it is kind of a meta-business, and certainly should make only decisions based on the business model -- after all "what's good for _____________
(substitute any business or corporate name for the traditional 'General Motors') is good for the USA!"

The world is too small for there to be competition -- but if there is competition; I must win! Why? Because it is my plan that is superior; I am smarter than all the others who do this! All dissent and competition must be crushed.

In individual families -- only the bottom line is important. Is it cost effective? Forget about "learning for learning's sake" (why learn anything if it doesn't make me some cash!). Why indeed?

Momentous Time for Me, and the World

We are nearly into the "Age of Trump." May we all survive and learn to think through it, and prosper.

I have passed the ten-year anniversary of my wife's unfortunate and unfair death -- and I may be making the next step in my "life change." My house may actually sell this time. (Don't jinx it!)

And life is fricking strange.

Cry for Aleppo

Will no one "cry" out in anger for the murdered citizens of Aleppo? Will no one mourn the millions of refugees on the road from ruthless dictators and their armies of deluded soldiers? Will no one think about the millions of Americans disenfranchised by the cyber lies and "fake news" of the trolls from Russia (and the American henchmen)?

Does anyone really care about the loss of the American Democratic system to the "halls of high finance" and "backroom economic deals"? China says "the one-China policy is not for sale"! Is there anything in American government, American politics, American ideals -- that is NOT for sale?

Do we live in a country "of the people, by the people, and for the people" or has it been rephrased as "of the one, by the few, and for the rich?" What has happened to us? I for one "cry for Aleppo" and its innocent people slaughtered for no reason -- attacked by all for no reason -- living in constant fear of death --- for no reason --- except senseless, barbarous and insane stupidity? Will anyone "cry for us" when we are going? Anyone?

Projected: FEAR

Fear for my country; fear for my retirement; fear for my job; fear for my social security; fear for my future; fear for all the poor and underprivileged out there; fear for anyone on any kind of government assistance; fear for women; fear for immigrants; fear for Muslims; fear for anyone non-white; fear for the smart and the open; fear for the stupid and the unknowing; fear for colleges; fear for students; fear for young women; fear for older people; fear for seniors; fear for pets; fear for all Americans; fear for all non-Americans; fear for Democrats; fear for Independents; fear for Planned Parenthood; fear for the immediate future/present; fear for the stock market; fear for the middle class; fear for progress; fear for the progressives; fear for people who can think; fear for all of us!!!!!!!

Capitalism Versus Democracy

Sometime each semester I tell my students that we live in a democracy in the US. Capitalism is an economic system that details the relationships involved with buying, selling, consumerism, supply and demand, stock markets, bonds, financial matters of all types, and the various ways that people earn, are taxed, and shape their own economic futures.

Now however the lines between capitalism and democracy have been blurred by our President-elect; now called the Real Estate President. He will be trying to run a political system as if it were an economic one -- something he should have better understood as a graduate of Wharton. And we will have to adjust or be taken up and compromised on a balance sheet somewhere.

Welcome to Idiocracy II.

President Donald J. Trump

For better or for worse, the businessman with the limited vocabulary and the huge ego will be the next President of the United States -- as of Jan 21, 2017. Will he be a good President? No one can really predict.

Because of his ego, narcissism, and the variety of advisers he will have -- the future is hard to predict. Will he make mistakes? Certainly, every President does. Will he lead us into war, or diplomatic difficulties, or wild internal struggles -- almost certainly, because of his peculiar ego and his unrelenting desire to be right.

Is the United States of America "in decline" with this President, I would like to think "not" -- but the real answer is still out there.

Falling, Falling, Falling...

Moment to moment, news cycle to news cycle, day to day -- we appear to be falling...into something. But what in God's name is it? Is it a government moving away from democracy into some kind of "bullied" capitalistic oligarchy?

Has the increasing speed of change overcome our democratic republic, and changed it irrevocably?
Has America itself morphed away from the "melting pot" to the "land of the white people?"

Can we slow this pace of incredible egotistical "making America 'great' again" into something that actually makes sense: preserving our heritage as a benevolent and kind nation for all future generations? Can we?

Witnesses to History

Are we all witnesses to history? Are we seeing, in unbelievable detail the piece-by-piece destruction of the American Dream -- by Americans?

Have we deliberately allowed ourselves to be so stupid, so estranged from normalcy; that we wish for and actually act out our own destruction? It is said that the "impulse" to suicide is always made with the "desire for something better in mind." Are we that desperate?

To Anyone I Know Who Voted For Trump, Especially My Relatives

You made a mistake. You drank the "koolaid." You bought the excuses, normalized the abnormal, and legitimatized the crook. You failed in your duty to really look into the candidates, and make an intelligent decision for all Americans. You voted your way because you always voted for that party.

You are a moron.

You watched Fox News and accepted it as the truth -- when all it did was appeal to your inner prejudices and stupidities. Yes, you are also a fool. You are gullible. You accepted "fair and balanced" news coverage from all the networks and sources because you think the world is really like television, and television of course always tells the truth.

You are a fool.

You also now think this "successful businessman" (by his own declaration) can do no wrong. He will be an inciter of change -- and you think that is all good. Because you don't know any better. You still think that "the Apprentice" was the best show on television.

You are a tasteless fool.

You are a Trump backer -- allied with white supremacists, the KKK, and all things retrograde and evil in the United States. I feel sorry for you, and your ignorance; but I cannot forgive you. You are the dross of history, the unintentional but causative anomalies of the devil's history among men.

Perhaps...

Perhaps America is unleashing a "new Mussolini" or a "white supremacist Hitler." If so, we have done it to ourselves. No outside influence, no untoward or illegal tampering with the vote counts. Just plain American stupidity married to anger, belligerent and knowing simplicity, and outright nihilism.

Yes, America has done it to herself. And we won't be "better" or more "united" when this horrible phase of our politics is over. Italy wasn't; Germany wasn't; and we won't be either. We will survive -- but not without splintering amongst our thinkers and pundits; not without grief, bitterness, and ridiculous polemics.

Perhaps...only the "balcony" or the "bunker" will set us free. We await the day.

Uncertainty is a Blessing ........Not

A human life is uncertain -- how long do we live, will we be happy, will this or that decision affect us down the road, will it all mean something? And so it is in Political America right now: we have the "not my President" contingent, the alt-Right crazies, the Black Lives Matter movement, the millennials, the feminists in fear of their rights, the immigrants in fear of their safety, the Muslims in fear of their possibilities in America, and everyone else --- just in fear!

Donald J. Trump has changed America -- and not for the better.

Loyal Resistance to Trump

Along with many, many others -- I call for "resistance to Trump's plans." In particular using "internment camps" or something like them, to capture -- hold -- or even intimidate immigrants to the US of A.; building a ridiculous wall on our Southern border; unthinking and short-sighted "trade" wars with the other great countries of the world; a winking "bro-hood" with totalitarian countries whose leaders "admire" one another (Russia, Syria, North Korea, etc.); a disemboweling of the Affordable Health Care Act (thereby throwing millions into the whims of Capitalistic insurance companies and "market principles"); plans to pack the Supreme Court with alt-Right candidates, regardless of credentials; forming an obstructionist, anti-progressive, crypto-fascist dictatorship out of our Democratic Republic.

There are many other "bad" Trump ideas: a ban on Muslims in America (who would be next?); gutting the EPA and its health and safety regulations; opposing climate change initiatives because "science doesn't matter to a businessman unless it becomes a 'vested' self-interest"; and perhaps hundreds of other inane and anti-human "initiatives" pushing us all back to the age of the Robber Barons, of which Trump is a small-fingered version.

America is NOT Doomed

We have Donald J. Trump as our newest President. We have separate wars and military incursions going on in: Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan (shhhh), Central Africa, Uganda (in pursuit of Boko Haram), in the Sudan (relief work), and all the other typical places where our military has a presence (the EU,
Ukraine, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, and many many other smaller places).

We  have pressures from everywhere: internally for jobs and more prosperity; internally from racists, xenophobes, misogynists, and crypto-fascists,white supremacists, anti-gays, homophobes, and others;
externally from Communists, America-haters, Nazis, religious fanatics of many stripes, and those seeking the "end of the world" as well.

And yet America will persist -- and succeed -- and thrive! Because we are trying to perfect ourselves, be better, and lead the world not to some specific place -- but to each country's best place, each individual's choice, every person's dream.

America Must Survive Donald J. Trump !

The United States of America has always tried to be a world leader ... for "good." It has often been selfish, self-serving, arrogant, and stupid as well.

But Americans are a generous, open-hearted people as well --- giving long after other countries have given up, helping those (all those) in need of help. We are not usually mean-spirited, but rather are tuned to helping others as best we can.

But now Donald J. Trump is the president-elect of the United States of America, and barring some cataclysmic event -- will become its leader on January 20, 2017. We must survive this "leadership" and strive to retain our basic character. We must. It is the American thing to do.

We Have the Right...

We have the right to think whatever we want to think. We have the right to vote for whomever we wish to vote for. We have the right to believe in whatever we want to believe in. We have the right to speak out about our beliefs. We have the right to remain silent as well.

We have the right to be free. We have the right to live unafraid. We have the right to learn and understand those who wish to harm us. We have the right to resist oppression and ignorance. We have the right to support all the causes and ideas we espouse. We have the right to be ourselves.

We have the right to stop you or anyone from hurting us, or anyone else.

Believe in America, Not in Trump

We are witnessing the most hideous Presidential Campaign in modern history, thanks to the amoral and ridiculous diatribes delivered by Donald Trump. He lies, he prevaricates, he insinuates, he backbites, he undercuts, he mesmerizing the "stupid" amongst us to actually listen to his babble.

And people are voting for him? Why, in God's holy name would anyone vote for such a creature; such a specimen of insidious self-promotion?

He makes one point about smaller government (given to him by his alt-right handlers) --- and adds a hundred lies and promises of "revenge" to it. He is a moronic and thoughtless jerk, hardly worthy of a mention in anyone's conversation -- except he is the "preferred candidate of all those righteous, god-fearing Republicans. They unfortunately-- value power and possibility of power, more than truth, more than justice, more than honesty itself.

Identity Theft -- the Bane of the Modern Techno-World

Am still dealing with the many flakes of "fallout" from my identity being stolen -- and how long in the future I will have to deal is up to the date of my death, to be sure.

The thieves should, at the very least, rot in hell!

Malfeasance; thy Name is Donald

If ever in America there was a politician in need of being arrested -- it is Donald Trump. Phony Universities, fake hotel "borrowing" deals, inappropriate use of the bankruptcy laws to avoid paying his bills, and cunning and ridiculous lies to everyone and anyone who will listen. How did this man win the Republican nomination for the Presidency -- why are people supporting him -- why does the press treat him as a legitimate candidate when his "sins" are forever in front of us.

Equal and balance coverage in the press/media does not work with him (and any other candidate). His sins and lies are too great; his corruption too deep; his sociopathic tendencies too ingrained. He is a criminal, not a businessman. Please everyone, for God's and America's sake, do not vote for him.

America Wins

Trump loses; Trump disappears into the "dustbin of history"; America is made "safe again"; the world breathes a sigh of relief; another Mussolini bites the dust; the horrors of racism, hatred of women and xenophobia slip into unholy memory; the world is "righted" again by becoming balanced again!!!

Daily Briefing on October 19th

Trump will "self-destruct"  again during tonight's debate with president-elect-to-be Hillary Clinton;
the financial "troubles" in my own life (caused by being the victim of check fraud) will not decimate my hopes nor exacerbate my fears; the various classes I have at LCCA will not bring down my spirit!

Life is a complex web of emotions and relationships! I love it all and want to be good to all! Even in this time of "national" and "personal" sorrow.

Matthew -- the Storm Comes

First dark, "squally" looking clouds  -- all day Thursday the sixth of October, 2016. No wind -- only a little breeze here and there.

Friday morning -- final preparations completed: storm shutters shut, furniture "locked down" outside, all flyable elements secured! Winds dancing around at 10 to 15 miles per hour. All day is a waiting game: power still on, dire warnings on television, internet, radio, and in the streets.

Late afternoon and the winds now start to grind, and release, and grind again --still not very strong. Then the rain begins as each squally if stronger than the last. Television warns that the "outer bands" are now creeping up the coast of Georgia towards Savannah. Still unsure if we are going to take a direct "hit" -- or not. Please -- not!

7:38 the power suddenly blinks off in the rain and medium winds of 30-40 miles per hour. Now am in darkness, seemingly secure, and watching as the dark slowly comes.

Rain picks up steadily -- but I am tired now of watching after three hours, and lie down to sleep. I get up and lie down several times over the next two hours and try to relax. Am fatalistic -- this would be as good as time as any to catch up with Sheila.

Am sleeping soundly now when I hear the loud crack--crack--crack sound of breaking wood, high up in the trees. I get up quickly, not wanting to get crushed if that damn tree is coming down. But curiosity drives me to the back kitchen window. I see the very large limb over my backyard knell in a kind of half broken position -- its tip on the ground, its "knee" still attached to the trunk. It's 1:38 in the morning and the storm is at its peak over Savannah.

The wind accelerates now in tremendous continuous gusting blows, swaying the kneeling branch back and forth -- but it looks like it will stay that way. I watch. For a long time. And still it doesn't really fall; its just drifts back and forth. I wonder if it will be big enough to actually drag the tree itself down -- a tree that is perhaps fifty times its size. Is the wind that strong.

Finally I am tired from watching and fretting and collapse into a kind of glazed half-sleep. I finally awake a to soft plopping sound as that one limb finally separates and comes down. It smoothly tears apart everything underneath it as it descends. a 35 foot high black locust tree -- which used to shade my backyard, a bunch of scrub tree, a metal cabinet, several lines of fencing -- all smoothly crushed to the ground.

And so I sleep. And think the storm will now tail off. It has done its worst. The wind does decrescendo. And I sleep, just a little relieved.

I walk up an hour of so later to two more large swooshing "plops" as two more large limbs fall, already shortened by previous deadfalls, but still heavy -- large -- unstoppable.

I was so very glad I moved my car to a space on the side of my house -- it survived because of sheer luck and just a little foresight.

The aftermath will come with the daylight.

The Story of Hurricane Matthew -- Part One

I had lunch with Professor Matthew Adams on Tuesday, October 4th. He bragged that he was coming to Savannah in "storm fashion" to do some serious damage later in the week. You have to know Matthew, a rambunctious young professor at Savannah State University who just received a full time tenure track appointment in History. I was a "buddy" of his (and his boss) when he was full time at Savannah Tech -- and urged him to leave, and  go for a full time tenure track job anywhere else. I, like many others, saw the handwriting on the wall at Savannah Tech for all the young professors.

So, he joked then during lunch at the Kayak Cafe Midtown that he would do some serious damage to Savannah, and he (or his meteorological namesake) sure did.

Today is October 10th -- and the damage to thousands of trees is evident. And Tybee Island is still in severe storm recovery mode. Just hours ago the mandatory evacuation order was lifted, but not for Tybee Island (too much damage). The returning horde of Savannah residents will find most of the city still without power, trees lying everywhere, and most everything closed. Many people also don't have water, sewer, cable, cell coverage, etc. I fortunately have all of those -- and I am truly grateful.

Tomorrow (on the 11th) I will write an hour by hour outline of what I witnessed -- and lived through.

Last Call from ECCA for 2016

Giving exams today at this campus (ECCA) is bittersweet -- some of these students were so young, so jejune, that getting them to understand conceptual thinking was near impossible. Many of them were also socially arrested, incapable in doing research (outside of simple searches on Google), and lacked the perspicacity or background to function academically on the college level.

And the level of a Public Speaking class is low-level; it is a "basic skills" class. I am pretty sure only about 25% grasped the basic material of the course. Most of the others can't really study, or operate independently enough to keep up with the course. I feel sorry for them; but I will still grade them honestly (and that will not give them a good start on their college transcript).  And so it goes.

As Predicted, Hillary Won

People cannot be other than what they really are. And Donald J. Trump is, in effect, the faker he is. There is no substance there, only lies and self-aggrandizement.

Hillary is solid, if unspectacular -- like our best presidents: Truman, Lincoln, Jefferson. She is a "mensch" in ways that Donald could never be. She will be a good President for all of us.

Trump Zero, Hillary Won

It was no contest; Hillary beat Donald in their first debate. How could she possible lose?

The Campaign, the Economy, the World

Our Presidential campaign in the US needs to be "over" --- and quickly. It is assuredly "sinking" our hope, our economic plans, our national vitality, and our image/substance in the eyes of the rest of the world.

Donald is an embarrassment -- a foil to Putin's comments of "he's a genius" (huh?) and his own arrogant know-nothing but say anything style. Donal is dangerous -- he may indeed be a psychopath, but certainly he is a self-consumed narcissist. Ms. Clinton is a much better choice -- but she has fallen into the "trade barbs with the bully" mentality that characterized the primary season.

In so doing, she has unfortunately shown herself to be a "bad candidate" and a "poor campaigner." The way to beat a coarse bully is not to out-bully him, but rather to ignore him. She should not be characterizing Donald's supporters as anything but Americans -- perhaps who have lost their way -- but Americans nonetheless. The 911 heroes did not run the the burning trade towers just to save the people who  believed as they did -- they tried to save everyone. That should be the attitude of every loyal candidate -- and every loyal American.

The Unbearable Lightness of Being...Alive

Today was a good day in teaching -- perspective shifts (for students) all worked. Classes understood that time is running our.

Persuasive speeches are due now until the 13th of September -- the pressure is on. As usual. Keep on "truckin..."

Trump or Clinton

Did a "straw poll" today in one of my classes -- results: 20 for Trump, 2 for Clinton 1 No Vote. Yikes. Of course these results are in Effingham County -- and they are among 14-year-olds'. Does suggest however that the country is in turmoil; few are really listening to what is happening out on the stump; and parents only follow their own "general ideas" without too careful a process of examination. Still -- yikes!

Missing Savannah Tech

Teaching all day out at ECCA, as I now do, puts me in the unfortunate position of missing the chatter and camaraderie of my colleagues at Savannah Tech. None of the high school teachers out at ECCA are really convivial with me (since I am not one of their "clan") -- with the exception of the Director of the Program (Mr. Ashley Kieffer, and the Assistant Director -- whom I only know as "coming from Tybee Island").

So life now oscillates between work and sleep -- with very little else happening. Hopefully this will change during the second half of this term.

Trump Needs to Go(P) Away

Madness has come to our election process --- and stayed. And now we are stuck with "madness" as a process instead of politics. We have never seen or heard anything like it: no truth, no respect, no civilized behavior, no joy, no Americanism, no patriotism, no honesty, no intelligence --- only Trump.

Ennui or Anger

The serendipity and lifeless decision-making that passes for leadership -- makes me wonder about the future of organizations in America. Education in America has good middle-level leaders --- but on top, very few.

I could cite from vast personal experience in every kind of educational level -- but I need to "burn no bridges."  Suffice it to say I am enthralled when an administrator actually does what he/she says he/she would do. I am flabbergasted by decent communication. I am amazed when I am actually consulted in an area where I hold the most knowledge. Life is amazing fragile and mistimed.

Growing...Younger

Having to teach a slightly younger age group requires an increased level of energy... humor, watchfulness, focus, etc., but not -- in essence, control. Give them the freedom to let go. Give them permission to learn.

Dueling Bureaucracies

Textbook or no textbook ?

Anyone care about the students in our ECCA/STC program besides the teachers? And of course the students themselves.  Just asking.

Schedule Changing

Due to circumstances beyond my control (teaching assignment shifts to another county) I won't be doing blog posts til evening; and I won't be checking messages until then either. You can always text me -- or try to phone me on my cell -- but I am pretty much "used up" in travel to and fro, and becoming a full-time college teacher on the high school level. Teaching 14-year-old's, whom the State of Georgia in its wisdom claims are "ready for college."

Life has an increasingly ironic twist to it these days.

The Nemesis of Aging

All around me, including in my own family, I am witnessing the changes wrought by age. Some of the people I know from Rotary (who are in their 70's) are suffering severe changes to their bodies, their lifestyles, their concerns for their families, and their outlook on life. Recently we had a "discussion" as to whether local Rotary charity funds should be designated for a "public school." Some Rotarians resigned because they could not admit that funds from local taxes weren't enough to cover all the costs of running local schools ... an amazing mistake on their parts.

Local schools, even in the relatively rich district of Savannah/Chatham, are in deep trouble. So very many giveaways of school supplies, books, writing utensils, toilet paper, and even volunteer time -- all testify to this evident fact. Yet some of our intrepid Rotarians insist that all that is the "venue" of the School Board and local school taxes. How blind can we be?

In my own family I am beginning to see the effects of disease and aging on my siblings and their families. My own wife passed away ten years ago, at a young age, due to IBC Breast Cancer. It was a premature and horrible death -- undeserved for the beautiful young woman who suffered it. And now my older siblings and their spouses are beginning to feel the "footsteps of the future" in their own lives. It is a horrible and inevitable outcome that we all await!

The Conundrum of Trump

Donald J. Trump epitomizes the worst elements of the American character: narcissism, ethnocentrism, the sense Americans are somehow "chosen," entitlement, selfishness, and the ability to "blowhard" about every issue, problem, or solution!  Americans have long been aware that we are often culturally unaware of our real place in the world, and even more often, exaggerate our own position as "exceptional" on the world stage.

We create the impression that we "know all" when more often we "know little" or even "know nothing!" Our accomplishments are there for everyone in history to see, but so are our shortcomings.
We often fritter away opportunities to solve our major social problems; we too often use outright "denial" as our "code of arms" to protect us from opposition or judgment by others. Sometimes stupidity is just too obvious -- and too often we are obviously oblivious to what is really going on.
Thank God there are those among us who are more introspective and self-aware. Thank God!

Will Donald Trump Go Away?

This is a real question!  If he loses the election -- will he slink back into the slime of his narcissism -- or will he continue to plague the political and governmental spheres with his "wisdom?"

Is he the "opening shot" of a class war, or a race war, or a gender war, or a political war, or a military war --- in America?

Career Academies -- Not a Problem?

The "tales of woe" coming in from the field, where college professors are brought to their knees by high school "team spirit," are once again flying about like pollen in the air. The Arts Appreciation teacher, newly hired, was nearly "done in" by her high school Career Academy experience in Liberty County.  What a surprise!  Not a surprise.

Has America Gone Insane?

Is America really a full country of racists, xenophobes, misogynists, and lunatics? Do "older white" men really control the country --- and cast everyone else's fate to the winds? Are the Tea Party, white Evangelicals, and neo-fascist skinheads all to be painted with one brush --- that of "the New America?" Has America itself deteriorated so much that there is, like Donald J. Trump, no moral compass?

Will America really elect Donald J. Trump as the next President of the United States?

Crisis Management

I am involved with several different bureaucracies -- and I won't say which one -- but one of them operates entirely on the theory of "chaos and crisis management." Imagine if you had a large company -- and you waited until two days before you opened for business before you hired "staff" to run your business. Then imagine that you went through all the trouble to "vet" new staff, background checks/drug checks, etc. Then imagine that with one day to go "they" decided: "we can't hire new staff because we may not have enough business to support their salaries -- and then we will 'look bad'."

Yes, well that's where this particular bureaucracy is right now -- and the turmoil and chaos are both rampant.

"Dancer" Mentality

As I complete this term's group of SLOGS (excerpts from the Student Logs I keep on each student in my classes)-- I am struck by the growing level of "dancer" mentality among the Millennials.  I have students from all over the world in my classes --- and these students are often the children of "Baby Boomer" parents, many of whom chose either the academic/artistic or simply the artistic lifestyle. These children then are often exotic (because of being born in other countries, in an "artistic" family life) with few conventional leanings.

Often they are "vegan" -- at least partially so (and usually not too dogmatically in their own lives). But they truly think they have worked out the "big picture" of life. For example: healthy exercise and avoiding animal proteins leads to long life and happiness for all! (God forbid that nature should overwhelm such nurture!) The gaps in their education are wide indeed -- contemporary science, current changes in science/technology, most ancient cultures/languages, and human development generally.  Instead they substitute the sweet rhythms of their own ideas/music/meditation to assuage those weaknesses.

Just because you are 25, privileged, and with little formal education beyond primary school, and have attended the "school of life (actual profile)" -- doesn't make you a prophet for the rest of us. YOU DON'T KNOW ENOUGH!  Be humble; understand what you lack; learn; listen; grow -- in balance, not arrogance. All of us should and must follow that same advice.

Bernie Sanders and the Beast That Got Away

Progressives can be narcissistic too! Apparently. They want it "their way --- or not at all." They would rather risk the health and safety of us all by pouting and refusing to back the Democratic nominee because their man "Bernie" did not get the nod.

How selfish; how stupid; how dangerous! Elect Donald J. Trump -- why not? Let's just see what happens. Will the world survive? Will we alienate every other nation on earth (except Russia of course -- thank you Vladimir -- kiss, kiss)? And then of course Trump's Evangelicals will be happy because we'll all be "closer" to the end of the universe --- yikes. How crazy are the "Bernie or Bust" people? Can't control a "mob" I guess!

Democrats MUST Rebound

The Democrats must rebound from the hatred, the naysayers, the hypocrites, and the Orwellian Neanderthals who support Donald Trump. It would not only be a disaster if Mr. Trump became President of the United States -- it might be an "extinction" event for smart people (see "Idiocracy"), a neo-political pogrom (see "Holocaust") for women/independents/and Americans generally, a catastrophe for life and the earth (see "what climate change")!

Mr. Trump appeals only to the lowest human instincts: selfishness, stupidity, competition to be the richest, savage ignorance, ridiculous lying, and unalloyed dishonesty!  If Trump wins; we all will lose!

Crimea, Ukraine, Aleppo, Syria, Trump/Election, the Baltics?

Are we in America and in NATO now facing another face-off with Vladimir Putin? Are we being propelled forward by politics and momentum to some kind of confrontation?

Is that what Russia wants? Is that what the world needs? Is Putin so blind (as blind as Trump perhaps) as to think that somehow we can stop the nuclear train several rails short of annihilation? We need cooperation not madness!

Wikileaks, Kaspersky, and the American Election for President

Is Putin really trying to "tamper" with the American election by releasing emails from the DNC -- to destabilize the Democratic convention? If he is, or if Russian hackers are, or if someone else is --- and covering their URL tracks -- it is an anemic and moronic attempt!

Americans can recognize and ignore the kinds of "big lie" approaches used in American politics. "Crooked Hilary" is a big lie -- the big lie of this GOP campaign.  Just like last cycle it was that "Obama will take away your guns" or "Obama will take away your Bibles (West Virginia ministers, 2012). The Big Lie is an old and shallow technique -- which, this far out from the election, will be defeated by the press; by investigative journalism, by the free press we all cherish.

Long Live the King

As the many Jesters crowed throughout the exorbitant courts of Europe for a thousand years: "Long live the King (the King is Dead)!  Long live the King!"

The Death of Donald J. Trump

In the political intrigue coming up to the RNC in Cleveland, we learn that Trump offered the "presidency" (note small 'p') to John Kasich, Governor of Ohio -- in exchange for his place on the Republican Ticket as Vice-President!  How can that be? It "can be" because the Trump Advisors (note Trump family) liked Kasich and though he was the one candidate who could be President while Trump was off doing what he wanted to be doing -- a kind of "superhero advisor/controller out there in the world 'making America Great again'"!

There has been all kinds of talk about how The Donald doesn't really want to BE President, he just wants to "win the Presidency" and then, incredibly, give it away to the Vice-President. At least Kasich would have been better than Pence!  Now it looks like, if Trump "wins" the Presidency (how, god only knows), that he might actually do some of the work connected with being a President -- and he won't be making any money doing it!  Yikes.

Trump's Family

We are not electing Trump's family --- handsome children, beautiful wives (former and current)! We are electing a President of the United States.

We are not electing the best "hee haw" storyteller, or the best name-caller, or the best prevaricator!
We are electing the President of the United States of America.

We are not electing the best womanizer, or the best "good ol' boy," or the best crook!  We are electing the President of the U.S. of A.

We are not electing the best fake, the best jerk, the best loser, or the best bankrupt businessman! We are electing the President of America.

We are NOT electing Donald J. Trump!

It Was The Best of Times; It Was the Worst of Times!

My friend and colleague Marcellus just earned the full-time position in Speech at STC. The RNC opens its "coronation" of Trump today in Cleveland's Quicken Arena!

Hillary leads in the polls versus the "uber businessman" Trump!  Six police officers were shot in Baton Rouge yesterday morning -- and Donald Trump says that Barack Obama is to blame!

All life is fleeting!

We Weep Again -- this time for Nice

The insidious and insane terror network known as ISIS (or DASH, or ISIL, or the Caliphate) has struck again with a van, guns, and a murderous heart.

Many are dead; many are injured!  All because they were out watching a fireworks display commemorating Bastille Day in the beautiful city of Nice. I don't know where this will lead in the USA -- I hope not to Trump Presidency, I hope not to the horrific suggestions of a Newt Gingrich, I hope not to a war of violence within the US. I hope not...,.

Wait For It; Wait For It

On the 18th of July, during this year of the Lord 2016, the Republican Convention will begin in Cleveland, Ohio. That city that had been so honored by the victory by the Cavaliers will be dishonored by the GOP's cavalier attitude towards the truth.

The GOP will eventually nominate Donald Trump for President, amidst the confusion and hullabaloo
of a ritual convention -- this time bereft of honesty, fair play, and a decent candidate. And the Republican and Conservative faithful will weep -- because people are unwilling to acknowledge their own stupidity, their own crassness, their own lying about their "opponents," and will assuage their desire to destroy their own country. And the Evangelical Christians will rejoice -- for the "end times" may actually have arrived.

Hurried Hurry Up Harried

Life at times seems like a jumble of jobs, and tasks, and allegiances, and duties, and mistakes ---- and no fricking respite!

Pick up the car; get the car fixed; get ready for a trip; be back in time to finish the report; finish the report; don't rest; don't stop; don't ..........think!

The Frenzy of Life

Life, sex, compassion, death, hard times, disappointment, anger, hate, love, and on and on!  Life in just the past few days has deluged me with all these -- and more.

How about you? Does your life seem "out of control" or literally streaming over the top, faster and faster, more and more out of control? If so -- you are on a typical life's journey -- and your key to survival and success is to slow the whole damn mess down; and make honest and true decisions reflective of who you really are.

Random Anger; Focused Ignorance

Horrendous week for the United States, for its police departments, for its public and private image(s), for its conscience, for its own sanity!  American prejudices and stupidities have been exposed -- and because of that, people have lost their lives.  Baton Rouge, St. Paul, Dallas, Savannah, Milwaukee, Chicago, Cleveland, Philadelphia, New York!

Society is in jeopardy because of our own polarized stupidity! Thank you news media; thank you Donald Trump; thank you haters!

Who Is Mr. Epperly?

I get literally hundreds of emails every day --- and I am not a very important person, as importance goes. But many of the emails should not be coming to me but do so because my name is mistakenly on a list somewhere -- and/or people just assume things about who is in charge -- or systems and/or people simply make numerous mistakes! So what percentage of my emails are mistake-mails? About 40 % --- yikes!

That's a lot of wasted effort, a lot of mistaken time, a lot of writing and reading and re-writing, all in vain. Take care emailers of the world --- get the person's correct name and URL!

The Beauty of Family

On the 4th of July I spent several hours on the phone with my daughter Tosha. She is family -- adopted, stolen, received, surrogate family! I love her like my daughter -- like Sheila's daughter -- like my own blood.

She and I have a different kind of conversation than I can or would have with my sister Linda. It just is -- because I am a "Dad" to Tosha, we get into things and joke about things (like her love life, MY love life (hah)) -- that Linda and I don't really have.

The Fourth of July

Fireworks, celebration, beer, hot dogs -- what is it all for? Are we really patriotic? Are we thankful to our all-volunteer army for keeping us safe from harm? Do we appreciate the sacrifices maintained by military families throughout the world -- in standing up for America, and truly sacrificing for it?

What is the real answer to the above questions? Will we still vote for a racist, fascist, xenophobic liar to be our President?

Foibles of Young Women

Unintentional flirting, allowing themselves to "play dumb" for too many specious reasons, "display" body syndrome -- in mostly inappropriate situations, asking ridiculous questions to assert their own sense of unworthiness (and flatter men), and about a hundred other behaviors -- all indicate that techniques for becoming adult are still learned in the court of "courtly love" traditions. These many behaviors become especially annoying when they are a substitute for seeking "real" knowledge, or simply establishing the reasons for their own self-esteem.

In America we all flirt badly --- too much, too little, nothing at all. But we shouldn't be broadcasting our lack of sensuality; we shouldn't be wallowing in our "grade school" romantic thinking. Life is deeper than an "Archie and Betty" comic book lifestyle.

Art is an Open Concept

Been having "interviews" this week for two potentially "new" instructors in Art Appreciation at Savannah Technical College. Had four excellent candidates! Reduced that to three just by sheer necessity.

All three "finalists" will now need to do a "class" or "demo class" for the Search Committee. Should be an interesting week next week--with the Speech Position Interviews dovetailing and overlapping the Art Appreciation "finals." At least there "will be blood." And fresh blood at that!

Theatre of the Absurd

Political campaigning in the United States during this 2016 Election campaign has rivalled and exceeded the most "absurd" forms of theatre ever put on stage. Trump uses every kind of logical fallacy -- and repeats ridiculous lies -- until some news organization picks it up, and then by conversation alone, it becomes an issue.

So far in the last few days: Hillary Clinton is a murderer -- though cleared by the hyper-political Benghazi Republican Committee; Hillary is a husband-abuser -- Bill Clinton actually had a black eye while in office; Hillary is a crook, earning billions from Wall Street donations -- Foundation, not her, got money NOT while she was in public office--NGO audited, funds all accounted for, no graft, no "crooked Hillary." More charges and outrageous statements will do doubt follow.

It is (Trump's Campaign is...) ABSURD! Just like Theatre of the Absurd!!!

Happy Birthday to Me

As I tell my students -- I am a thousand years old today. Not too far from the truth.

I remember to treat myself kindly on this day -- I am only human; and thus limited in time, energy, emotion, brains, and just about every other way. Just trying to be the best that I can be; and do the best for others.

Brexit Harming Us All

Great Britain's attempt to return to the "glory days" of pre-Economic Union Europe is harming economies and confidence all over the world. That same decision also is inducing rallies/protests about all the issues that supported the vote (and the exit): fear of immigration, nationalism (loss of British "Sovereignty"), financial issues, the engulfing return to brutal white supremacy, xenophobia, and others.

Trading partners like the United States are worried about their own connections to the industries, trading power, interest rates, and other functions that may be affected. And that worry is translating itself into losses in markets, in profits, and in common sense.

Males --- Rethink Donald Trump

Yes, men of America. You are angry about the way things are. Is that the reason to go outside your own beliefs and vote for a racist, a woman-user, a moron, a bully, a xenophobe, a jerk, and punish the country for not giving "you" what you want (a raise, your guns, a better job)!

Dump Trump now -- in your own mind. Vote for anyone else. Write in your own name. Be a strong human being -- not a "trumpian!"

Dealing, Dealing, Dealing

Everyone's life has a certain degree of complexity. Sometimes issues, demands, and desires stress us out to the most difficult degree possible. Life impedes happiness by blowing up small demands into large ones, and by letting little demands proliferate seemingly while we sleep.

I have seen people thrown into depression, or literally crushed down by such burdens. I have seen this among my friends, and in my colleagues. I have witnessed it among my students, and have felt it in my own simple life. "There is not enough money; there is too little time; I need this now; why aren't you listening to me; etc. etc. etc." And life goes on. And we are free to exhale -- and live another day.

Brexit or Non-Brexit; That is the Question

Voters in the UK will decide on Friday whether their country will begin the slow exodus process from the EU. If they "go" it will mean that the political and economic ties that have held Europe together for the past few decades will be severed, and the currency, trade, and political treaties held around the world will be shaken.

What it "could" mean for America is pressure on the dollar, a recession caused by changing trade patterns, and a loss of buying power in the world against a strengthening currency in the UK. The British Pound would revert back to its prominent Nationalist position in world economics -- and the Euro and related currencies would suffer the indignity of shrinking because of British economic stability. Yikes.

What does all that mean? It means instability in "capitalism" throughout the world, tightening of trade and trade barriers, and a harder environment for political and climate cooperation on a worldwide basis.

Girls in Summer Dresses

One of the real pleasures of the summer is watching people enjoy themselves -- swimming, out walking, running in the early morning before the heat builds in, gardening, dining out at restaurants, and simply being about in comfortable summer clothing. Women in summer dresses -- comfortable, not too short or deliberately revealing -- relaxed and smiling. Men in light summer shirts and slacks, or even (fashion forbid) shorts, if they are comfortable and not too "golf-like" or "frayed into 'holey' messes."

The summer gives us time to enjoy the warmth and yet still understand that changes are coming. It is our time of peace -- and calm, and love! Enjoy it along with an ice cream treat of your choice -- and taste the difference that is summer, especially in Savannah!

Regrettably, Donald J. Trump

America and the Republican Party (the GOP) -- have been embarrassed by the nomination of Donald Trump to the Presidency. Because of an alliance of underserved, typically-non-voting racists and xenophobes with traditional "conservative" neo-fascist Christian voters  (abortion, abortion, abortion) we are faced with the kind of election that will only be called a nightmare by future generations.

There will be name-calling, and twitter trolling, and ridiculous and insane theories, charges, and rants -- one candidate versus the other; along with a modicum of actual issue-related talk -- and then more trolling, theories, charges, etc. ---- until finally the voters will settle the whole mess in November --- and hopefully the better candidate will win. And let's hope that Hillary Clinton will become as good a President, all things considered, as her husband w

Monday Morning Coming Down

The "Golden Gate" Warriors lost to the Cleveland Cavaliers late last night!  Lots of Americans will be sleepy-eyed this morning due to that fact.

Donald Trump continues to embarrass himself and the country by his fascist candidacy for the GOP nomination for the Presidency of the United States. The politics of the USA is awash with money and split convictions -- it is the best of times; it is the worst of times. And it is Monday --- all day!

The Year of the Woman

Controversies abound this year about women. The shooter in the Orlando killings texted his wife (and she him) during the slaughter. A British MP was killed for stating views about BREXIT just a few days ago. Struggles about "campus rape" (and colleges hiding these Title IX "investigations") proliferate and resurface after the recent "soft" conviction of a rapist in the Stanford swimmer case.
Women are fighting back against abuse by non-Equity theatre companies by misogynistic and even criminal harassment by male actors, directors, and others. One theatre (Profiles Theatre in Chicago) closed suddenly as a result. In LA and NYC the ripples of small theatre sexual abuse (threatening, harassment, intimidation, and even physical harming, etc) are being talked about and prosecuted.

On the world stage -- in many countries, ethnicities, and religions -- women struggle to gain understanding, equal treatment, and permanent recognition as being human. And all these struggles are happening now --at this moment, in this second -- everywhere around the world! Honor women always!

Trump Backer

I have at least one former military personnel who is an avid backer of Donald Trump!  It is frustrating talking to "him" -- there are probably others. In "his" eyes Trump can do no wrong: guns, violence, anti-women, xenophobic, racist, anti-immigrant -- all okay with this "dude." This "guy" is insufferable -- and totally "one-sourced." "He" brags that he doesn't need to read anything, know anything, or listen to anything --- unless it comes from Rush Limbaugh, or Fox News.

"He" is emblematic of the problems the country is facing --- angry young men, who are too stupid to learn anything.

Student Energies

What sometimes restores my faith in "being human" are the thoughts, remarks, and energies of my students. Whether they are in their 20's or pushing 50, they bring a common sense to their discussions, a willingness to be open, and an understanding that "life is not exactly as their parents, or the media" portray it.

These students continue their own quests for life, affection, happiness, health and joy with a common sense approach to all things physical or spiritual. One cannot help, as a teacher, absorbing and growing from such magnanimous love for life. I appreciate every day the quenching of my own thirst for life in theirs.

Sadness Reigns

The death of many; the moronic incomprehension of the few (Donald Trump and all bigots); the passive stupidity of the silent majority ("from my 'cold dead hands'"); the tears of all human -- truly human--Americans!  America is awash with guns -- and God knows that an AR-15 is just the perfect squirrel-huntin' gun!

Got to have that extra large clip for sure -- don't want them squirrels to get away before I can blast them into the nether-more! I am so proud to be an American. We got the right to "arm ourselves" for any possibility. Some "Churchgoers need killin'" -- we got all the right tools for the job! The noise from that "dance club" (who knows what does go on thar') -- we can fix it right quick!

And so, sadly, human dignity and compassion took five giant steps back in America!

Students For ..........Nobody!

I have students who have "opted out" of the whole process of democracy!  They don't vote because "the Federal Government has nothing to do with me!" Or so they say. When questioned they admit that they pay taxes; they expect the Fed Gov to keep the Interstates flowing, and to "save" them from disasters, and to protect them if they are "attacked" by another country, or a terrorist, or whomever.

But they don't know anything else about anything!  Depending on whether they know (or like) immigrants they are for or against Trump's "wall;" they like or don't like a higher minimum wage;
they want higher (or lower) taxes; they just want to be "left alone" and have no involvement with anything that might shake the sameness of their own particular "status quo."

So they are not paying attention; they are not doing any research; and they don't intend to vote! We've gotten to the point that only the KKK and White Supremacists are interested in voting "for their rights." Yikes!

Ms. Clinton the Democratic Nominee for President of the US

History has finally happened. A woman has been chosen as a Presidential Nominee for a Major Political Party in the US. Given our racist past, and our chauvinist tendencies -- a miracle of no small order!

Now the campaign for the Presidency really begins. On one side a racist, misogynistic, xenophobic con man -- on the other, a politically savvy former First Lady, who believes in our systems of government. Selfishness/egoism versus service/empathy! Hmmmm -- what a choice!

Integrated Art

From time to time I am struck with thoughts of art, drama, dance, and the alternate lifestyles that go with these professions. The human spirit -- spiralling upward, striving to be free of earth -- and things -- and mass; lives a life well beyond ordinary living. The art of life is at play.

With a glass of wine and high hopes for experiences that will transform the humdrum into the holy,
the ordinary into the heart of things. A life well lived is a life lived with art in mind -- being artistic means being adventurous.

Colin Has "Left the Building"

As Tropical Storm Colin leaves the greater Savannah area -- it leaves with flooding in some streets, disrupted schedules (school was "called off" in mid-class on Monday at 5:00 PM), anxious locals, wary public officials!

Why? Two Tropical Storms in five days will be enough to make people a bit uncomfortable. Classes get "put behind" as people worry about simple travel across the area, street closures complicating picking up children, and just feeling like "none of us are really in control" during this messy time. All of that is true and raises the level of anxiety for all.

Monday, June 6, 2016

Welcome to Tropical Storm Colin

Yet another huge rainmaker is heading for Savannah, this time from the Gulf Coast side across the narrow nexus that is the Panhandle, then up through Southern Georgia, grazing Savannah as it heads out to sea. We will get lots of rain from it (5-8 inches or more) and plenty of cloudy weather -- but no high winds.

Rain all day Monday; rain all day Tuesday! Flooding all day -- both days -- but especially at high tide!

Welcome to strange springtime weather in the South!

Building the Wall

Some construction, or rather reconstruction, work being completed on my house today of the low-lying wall around the yard. Years and vegetation had eaten away several lengths of wall -- varying from 8 feet to about 1 foot.

Ms. Natalie Henshaw, ace former History Prof at Savannah Tech, and now bricklayer/plasterer extraordinaire is working of that project even as I write this. Thank you Natalie -- you are "worth your weight" in more than just dollars. Kudos to you...

Strange New World

Spending any amount of time "online" one soon discovers that the world has changed. In some ways the knowledge base, constantly growing and progressing, has been overtaken by the informational deluge surrounding it. Machines now talk to each other regularly -- cars to people, cars to dealerships, cars to services, refrigerators to the rest of the "integrated home," the Internet of Things has begun!

And with that -- and all the medical, feedback, and testing devices we can wear on or insert into our bodies -- keeps the information flow about our lives moving. And we can pass on that information to doctors, trainers, caretakers, or anyone we choose. The internet has quietly connected us to, and made us an inseparable part of, the universe.

Not everyone has noticed the change however. Some people still don't understand that the internet actually does exist; and it is not a fad; and it has already written the script for the next 100 years of our lives as humans. And then what?  Artificial intelligence isn't saying!

Online "Training"

Finally, they got the "registration" procedures shaped up so we could actually register. Why is Savannah Technical College always like Savannah Non-Technical College at its roots?

Two More Showings

My "former Bed and Breakfast" is being shown twice more in the next week -- out-of-town bed and breakfast buyers from the North!  Anything is possible -- but not likely.

There is a certain amount of work to be done on the property -- primarily on the Carriage House and all the vegetation engulfing the yard. I will do my best to keep up with it all and even get ahead of it, if at all possible.

If only I were ten years younger!  If only...

New Eduspeek Regulations

We now have to take training on sexual harassment called "HAVEN." If the website ever allows for our registration, that is.

Slowly, Very Slowly, the Summer Returns

If anyone thinks that there is no such thing as "global warming" -- then come to the South. We are still stunningly hot and humid -- but now, each year, the process begins earlier and settles in for a longer period of time.

Our temperatures and humidity are currently tolerable in Savannah, but every day brings a little more warmth, and with that warmth comes the "water content of the air -- the basic humidity." I has begun in earnest.

You know who you are -- and you know what day it is!  Enjoy it.

2016 Politics in the United States --The New Reality

Over the past few Presidential cycles we have seen some strange things happening -- the first black candidate for President, the first female candidate for President, the first business "mogul" running for President!  We have seen "political decorum" die a horrible death; personal attacks have become normal; social media has replaced the news cycle; and candidates now use "logical fallacies" as if they were true.  Making the "media bite" on a lie or a half-truth controls the argument!

Perhaps this all stems back to the use of "the big lie" (West Virginia ministers told by GOP officials that Obama would burn all their Bibles back in 2008); Obama was actually not a US citizen (Nigeria being his true birthplace no matter what his birth certificate said -- Hawaii); Sarah Palin is smart enough to take over for John McCain should be become incapacitated as President!

What are the oncoming elements of this "campaign for nothingness" in 2016?  More senseless name-calling; base and real innuendos of sexual, moral, political, or other indiscretions; complete lack of realistic plans to solve problems? Will we just come down to the difference between "making American 'great' again" and "stronger together?" What is our fate from now until November -- and beyond?

Confluences

So many many things happening at the same time. House things, school things, life things, work things. Lots of pressure to complete -- things. All carry a layer of stress with them.

This stress weighs on a person -- weighs them down so much that they cannot function without thinking, about the stress. About the STRESS!

Turned On Its Ear

Scientists tell us that the earth's "magnetic poles" are actually shifting. So the North Pole will no longer be where we, as humans, have placed it within our time in human history. Ditto with the South Pole.

But other "shifts" are also happening -- Donald Trump has shifted the political compass to ingratiate his way into the Republican "Presumptive Nominee" status even though he has insulted all his competitors, most of his potential supporters, and the intelligence and good will of every manner of Americans who could vote. And now the press has pivoted and treats him as a legitimate and "alternative outsider" candidate -- when actually he should be handled as a deranged and ridiculous psychotic.

And now Bernie Sanders, with his delusional "revolution" (which houses an increasingly delusional anti-establishment without sufficient reason group of millennial outsiders) threatens to "blow up" the democratic side of the election -- and allow someone like Trump to actually gain the presidency.
Yikes. The world is indeed "on its own ear."

If We Actually Elect Donald Trump...

If America actually elects Trump we will have earned the title of "the lost Empire." Trump would end any remaining feelings for America as the "righteous, compassionate country" willing to help anyone and everyone in need.

America does need to change. But not to change into Trumpland. Trumpland is a place where only bullies and hardheads win, where women are devalued because they are women, and all issues are decided at the last minute -- by Trump-thinking (ignorance).  And so it goes...

Rotary Forever

Just completed participating in the Rotary 6920 Region Convention over the past weekend at the Desoto Hilton Hotel in Savannah, GA.  It was great and gave the opportunity to learn a lot more about Rotary, the variety of reasons why people are in Rotary, and to choose one's own reasons as to "why you are in Rotary."

Rotary is a dual organization -- it is a "business organization" that draws together leaders from all aspects of business and the professions, to function as a group and create fellowship with one another; it is also, through its Foundation, one of the most successful charities and engines for change in the entire world -- and yes, it is worldwide. Groups and local organizations help other regions of the world, and other cities, and other communities, on the macro and the micro scale. They offer disaster relief -- in times of health, welfare, weather, and war-related disasters. They offer personal interaction -- through visiting groups from country to country, student exchanges, and other personal diplomacy opportunities.

Rotary takes on big projects -- like the elimination of Polio worldwide; and sticks to it until the job is done. (It is nearly done as I write this.) Rotary is a function of brain and heart -- of friendship and brotherhood amongst all. It is an organization I am glad to belong to, and participate in.

Is "Trump" Punishment?

If there is to be an "idiocracy" in our future, surely his name will be Trump! Know-nothing; policy for everything; not understand the limits of WH power; foolish in the extreme; unorthodox without realizing the harm he is doing; willful and selfish; and a liar and name-caller to boot; your worst nightmare of a bully: welcome to god's punishment for America!

It was unthinkable to imagine a Donald Trump Presidency. Now it is requisite. There are enough stupid and willful white men in America, enough racists, enough women-haters, enough anti-intellectuals, enough foolish young people, enough anti-gay people, enough Evangelical "end timer's," enough anti-feminists, enough morons, enough ... enough ... enough ... -- to possible elect this man in November of 2016. Pray for each other in this time of horror.

Non-Professional Non-Faculty Non-Development

As the PowerPoint session that was to close our morning inspirational program (see title above) ground to a halt -- and the microphone that was to carry the soft-spoken voice of the final "acknowledgement" refused to amplify -- I, once again, congratulated our school on its flawless record of "programs with errors" now continuing for nearly a full year.  We should be renamed the Savannah Nontechnical College -- because our technology is 20 years old and often, most often, it simply doesn't work.

Ten minute delays (where nothing happens) -- 5 minute downloads of 2 minute videos -- multiple occasions where people who should be using microphones don't, and people who use microphones use them badly -- welcome to the faculty world of which I am a member.

Grades Determine Self Worth for Many

Why does someone think of themselves as a "B" student rather than an "A" student?  Does a grade, given in an imperfect and often biased world constitute a true test of worth?

I don't think so.

When I was in school (just after the creation) -- grades were only important to sort out effort, not inherent value. It was widely believed in my "set" that anyone could get "great grades" with the right kinds of techniques, effort, and focus. Coming to class, taking notes well, looking at one's notes, doing assignments: those were the keys to a successful grade (and learning). Nowadays we want to be on "automatic" --- learning without any effort on our part. The old joke about "sleeping with your textbook under your pillow" has now been tried and used as a typical "study technique." And that is why we are entering the "age of idiocracy." Long may it wave -- welcome, Mr. Trump.

Careless Students -- But Not About their Pictorial Portfolios

Some of my students spend more studious time on Snapchat or Facebook editing their swimsuit pictures than they do on their academic progress.

I have several students who are missing one speech from this term --- and who will get a C rather than an A because of it -- who talk constantly before class  about their picture posts on social media. One student was so proud of her bikini shot on the beach this week (exam week)  than she was of anything else ("Finally my buns look toned and tan!!!!") These students are insultingly shallow and will likely stay that way since they haven't gotten the message -- any message for that matter -- about responsibility, growth, focus, etc.

I have now sent emails to them informing them of their situation -- which I am sure they will not read, alas.

Too Pale?

One of the group presentations in one of my Public Speaking classes dealt with "diversity." What are the recognizable differences between people (physically) that are used to "troll" them by others.

Too black, too big, too fat, too dumb, too pale! Yep, that's right --- too pale. It's amazing what children (and the likes of Donald Trump) will use to disparage others. Beauty is actually in everyone's face -- too black is not an issue, nor is too gay, nor too bearded, nor too anything.  The amount of color you have, or size, or roughness, or smartness, or anything --- is your distinct feature and to be cherished not disparaged. You are what you are -- magnificently -- and should be appreciated for it, no matter what.

Smart, or Too Smart, or Not Too Smart

Politics is like our own special national education process!  We think we know who and what ideas are going to "win" in an election, and yet we are oft defeated by seemingly random circumstances.

Trump has all but won the GOP nomination for President in 2016. What a tremendous loss for the Republican Party (and the nation) -- throwing away its own history to nibble at the fascist table of an oligarch maniac (Donald Trump by name). The Party of Lincoln is now the Party of Trump. All hale racism, xenophobia, misogyny, and multiple other kinds of hatred and small-mindedness.  Trump has "trumped" the field and "trumpeted" his own success story. Yikes.

Someone please pray for the United States and the continuing health of Hillary Clinton!

The Crucible of Exams

It's another exam day -- the second in a series of four.  And the students who have to take the exam, are hard at it. They probably should have done the Research Project instead...but that was their choice.

My people from Wagram, NC, John and Celeste Lewis, are on the way to San Francisco today (by car) to pick up their cruise to Alaska. It should be the trip of a lifetime for them -- for me it would be another episode of Dangerous Catch on the tube. Not that much to say in "wild nature" I'm afraid, especially by boat. There are so many other things to see in the world --- Alaska would not be a first choice for me. No food culture -- very limited access to local people -- too much danger. Like taking a trip to Syria to see the ancient ruins (hah).

Year of Living Dangerously

Women are always difficult to "read" -- especially if you are male. They (women) do not ever think like men do. Even if a man tries to anticipate how a woman thinks, and then guesses the opposite -- he will be wrong. Women are hard-wired differently than men. Accept it. Get over it. Live with it.

Men are simple and not very complex creatures. They head for something, say, the food bowl in the corner, and little will deter them from achieving their goal. No matter what, they have to get to the damn food bowl, and by golly, they will get to it. Men are hugely "dumb" in that regard, and hugely successful in getting the simple things they want. Anything more complex than that, and men have to break down the "quest" into many, many simple straightforward little quests. And that is always problematic.

Women, on the other hand,... oh, what do I know!

Help When Needed

In the past couple of days I have been unintentionally counselling students to "trust themselves" and their own thinking about their future, rather than just relying on their parents to "make decisions for them."  I am talking about students, some extraordinarily talented some not, who silently abrogate their own control over their lives and let "Mommy and Daddy" think for them.

This may apply to career choice (money first), or college choice if they transfer (get the cheapest education possible), personal choice (marry the first guy that seems interested in you), or every other kind of choice!  Why is it that so many of our 20 plus year old's are afraid to make decisions or to live their live on their own.

What are they afraid of? Is this an American problem because of "fear of failure" and "helicopter parents extended throughout our class system" (it used to extend just through the rich and privileged)?

What will be the final result of multitudes of young Americans following such weak and unsure advice? Stay tuned.

Exams

There are daily tests in people's lives: this report due, that payment needing to be made, that drop-off happening "by the end of the week."  All kinds of little tests, and processes, and endpoints.

And we endure them all. Some of us make too much of them -- and don't allow ourselves to do well.
Others resist the pressure, don't really think about what needs to be done, and fail.

Which are you? Are you a success, a last-minute success (procrastinator), a partial success (I'll get that finished by next Tuesday), a failure, a partial failure (I just didn't have time)?

How do you cope with deadlines, endpoints, finishes, etc? How do you?

When the Doves Cry...

Prince was/is an amazing artist! No matter that he has died -- no matter that there will probably be "drugs" in his system (via the autopsy) -- no matter that he was a "good" person in spite of his lifestyle, his profession, his desire to be unique, his temperament!

His ideas live on; his music will live forever; his influence is undeniable to anyone who can see. Music soothes us all to different degrees. Prince brings out the "artist" in all of us. He is the Shakespeare of rock musicians.

Thursday, April 21, 2016

Prince is Now Gone -- But Not the Music

When a celebrity passes -- the grief is public!  Everyone remembers and cherishes their own link to the one passing -- the music, a song, an event, a memory.

Prince was the kind of iconoclastic icon that defied our sense of him.  His special music mix involved many genres, styles, moments, and especially lyrics -- that will live on in our heads til we pass. That is what "art" does for all of us. It extends our joys. It consummates and completes our own small moments.

Rest in Peace --- Prince. We will play your music and live it -- for as long as we are alive.

Again?

It's that time of year!  Please don't make me do my speech on Tuesday -- I promise I will be ready on Thursday, honest (not!).  And there it is.  Man's inability to stay focused, disciplined, complete the task, and move on to "bigger and better." Instead I will fight for my "right" to be a sluggard.

Why are students the way they are? Why are workers the way they are?  Why are college students the way they are? Why, why, why?

As a student I was always eager to get it done; to get it over with; to complete the task -- succeed -- and move on! What has happened to American students, American education, America in general.

Don't ask Trump.

Crazytime

This Presidential Election: this time in America, this time in world history, this time in the twilight of the extinction of humankind (think "global warming"), this time is racist history, this time in chauvinism, this time in social media overload, this time in cybercrime, this time in cyberbullying, this time in religious zealotry, this time in religious pandering, this time in faith lapses, this time in blessed capitalism (facetious, of course), this time in human neglect, this time in world decay, this time in technological miracles (think "nano" and/or "genomic"), this time in human sadness (think "refugees," war, and human degradation of human life), this time in life, this time in despair, this time albeit too briefly of hope, this time in memories (think the "happy" ones only), this time in time ------ is Crazytime!!!

Donald Trump Should Not Be President

The Republicans are being "hoodwinked" by a second-rate celebrity salesman. They are "falling in line" with a racist, misogynist xenophobe who believes only in the drivel that spews out of his brain.

He has fooled all the disgruntled Americans who need to have someone to blame for current problems: economic, educational, job-oriented, family, drug-related, etc. and so they blame who HE blames: the Chinese, the Mexicans, the criminals, the immigrants, etc. Stupidity reigns; and Donald Trump is the King with no clothes. Take a look -- and vote elsewhere!

New York, New York

It is perhaps one of my favorite places in the world. Why? The bustle, the energy, the plays, the restaurants, the people, the creative energy, the "life" teeming everywhere.  It is, for many, the center of the universe; and for others, the only center they will ever know. Short trips to Baltimore, or Washington DC, or Chicago -- ancillary, tourism, "just visiting."

Today, April 19th or 2016, it is also the center of the political "universe" in the USA -- the biggest primary to date -- determining the fate of  "Bernie," Hillary, and the "Donald."

Trump -- America's Worst Example

Americans can be many things: genuine, empathic people, misogynists, racists, extremists, white power fanatics, KKKer's, xenophobes, and every kind of other "crazy" you could imagine.

And Donald Trump is the worst of us. He is a pig; a racist; a snarky and ridiculous blowhard, an "ugly" American in the worst possible sense of that term, a jerk, a moron, and a candidate for President of the United States. He could even "win" that Presidency if Americans don't wake up and listen to their better angels.

We are "in trouble" if Trump is able to command the Republican convention and scare that party into nominating him -- so that he can lie, deceive and obfuscate his way to the Presidency. Beware all!

Unbridled Youth

Students often don't learn enough about discipline, and personal responsibility -- until it's too late.  Until the grades are posted and there is nothing that can be done about them. Until the two weeks of missed classes has turned into four -- and they have been removed from the class.

Unless a student from high school learns the lessons of personal responsibility -- she or he can never succeed in college. Unbridled doesn't mean "free" -- every gambol must be paid for.

Unflappable

As I watch my many students maneuver around the remaining assignments from all their classes this term, I am struck by the unflappable though misguided thinking that underpins their approaches. They just don't "sound" capable when they talk about "all they have to do" in "how little time they have left."

It is the way of all students, the way of all procrastinators, the way of all survivors. Not many of my students actually detail how they will really "overachieve" and "exceed even their own expectations" -- instead their words are related to "survival," "hope," and "please God....let me pass" kind of thinking.

One does wonder how Aristotle's peripatetic "Academy" students dodged their assignments, complete with whining narrative, until the last possible conversation.

The Discomfiture of Age

I can anticipate the time --- perhaps not too long from this date --- when just dragging oneself out of bed will be a chore almost too difficult to take on.  That day will feature: tiredness, aches and pains, and a general malaise perhaps related to having no fixed plans, no goals, no focus.

Now mind you, I am not anticipating such times with any hint of acceptance or pleasure. I am just acknowledging what I have seen in others, and what I anticipate in everyone at some time in their own journey. It is not a "sin" to just feel worn out, or used up, or perhaps just unmotivated. It is however a sincere reality in all those who have reached that time -- when life is more implausible than enjoyable.

Rain, Finally

So, it's raining today.  The gentle kind of warm spring rain that we get in Savannah -- no big storms, just steady light rain. It's going to be warm as well -- in the 70's --- no wind to speak of: a pretty spring day.

But for students it's a day to slough off and stay in bed; to refuse to think; to stop their focus and just rest...again.

After all --- it's raining.

Monday Equals Tired

Don't exactly know why it is -- the weekend was not overly bustling -- but Monday mornings (and afternoons) are like "death walking." Students drag themselves around -- and it takes every ounce of energy to assure their involvement in the "education process."

Of course the weather is a bit of a factor -- even though it is sunny it is cool and almost uncomfortable outside at night.  And the pollen.  Oh, the pollen --- coats everything and rides the wind everywhere: including onto every part of one's body if one ventures outside at all. And the workload at the end of the day is immense. Almost too much. Almost.

End Times

The end of a semester to me always carries with it the distinctive feeling of the "end times." The wrath of God (grades) descend on the Faithful (unfaithful students) and show them that their responsibilities overcame them (they didn't do their work) and now they are doomed to hard time in limbo (studying for exams).

It also means some students will be transferring to four-year schools; others will be dropping out to earn more money (to take more classes in the future); and some students will be giving up entirely (they don't see the merit in more education no matter what people say; they consider themselves "complete" just as they are -- living 'da life).

The End Times are a biblical story -- but they are repeated each term.

America Will Be Okay !

There is a "shaking out" period going on in American politics.  America is hearing about "revolution" from the Democrats -- but they have come to understand that the "revolution" would not kill the essence of what America truly is. And we have a choice -- fast (impossible) or slow (likely).

We have also witnessed our "dark side." We have seen the unabated racism, the hatred of "color,"  the veiled-but-not-too veiled hatred of women and equality, the fear of strangers and new ideas, the moronic anger at nothing in particular except some of our own failures. We haven't gotten a raise -- blame someone. We haven't been rewarded with a new position -- blame someone else. We haven't achieved all we wanted to achieve -- blame everyone! And Trump and Cruz are our mouthpieces!

In spite of it all -- we will triumph. We will still have the "dark side" and it still will be a threat to normalcy. But the best candidate will win -- and America will win. Because it must.

Wisconsin and Bernie

There is such a things as "Quixotic stupidity" -- that unfortunately is Bernie's revolution.  It is true that there is a disparity in wealth distribution in America -- and something needs to be done. But we cannot simply talk about it and then "declare a Socialist state" and pass the money around.

We are a Capitalist economic system -- the "bottom line" is everything in America, including in government. And the bottom line in government is possibility -- the possibility of change. How does "change" happen in America -- legislation yes, but in slow increments not in "revolution." The "delusions" that are owned by Bernie Backers are legion -- "just elect Bernie and 'watch things change?'" Yikes. How naive can one be?

The corporations and wealthy 1% will just "give over" their money to help the poor and the disadvantaged? In what universe?

Finances

"Finances" don't just mean "money." They also include the other staples: time, energy, interest (as in "concern"), and a dozen other things.

Finances are a way of being afraid. I am not afraid.

Beauty Girl

I knew a woman once, who was so beautiful she was incomparable. She was unique -- a flower unto her own reflection. A smiling and giving woman who would not allow her eyes to look away, who would not allow her voice to gain an edge of anger, who would not persist in being anti ---- anything!

I knew this woman very, very well. So well that in my dream I married her. And lived a life of seeming happiness -- amidst the roses, and the rain; the sun, and the pain. I married her --- and then she was called away. She grew too hurt to continue; and then she even died, in my dream.

And I was at fault. Some way -- I was at fault. She died; and I was at fault. Or so the dream goes.

There are women now just as beautiful as she was then -- but I am no longer able to dream. I died during that last dream you see.

On Wisconsin, On Wisconsin!

"...Grand old Badger State..." Tomorrow, April 5th is an important day in contemporary Wisconsin history. It is the day of the 2016 Primary election in both the Democratic and the Republican parties.

The Primary in Wisconsin, if I remember correctly, allows all voters who are Independent (or claim to be for this election) can "cross over" to vote for either side. I only hope that the "smart stuff" I know to be part of the Wisconsin "idea" holds true and rejects Trump, and Cruz, and yes, even Bernie Sanders. I like the "Bern" but he cannot govern as a Socialist, no matter how Progressive his young followers would like to see him act.

There are "few" if any "Progressives" in the 2016 Congress and that is not going to change before 2017. So, if Bernie "wins" we all lose. No Progressive "revolution," more rampant obstructionism (now perhaps from both parties) and the "end" of new thinking about change.

We need "change" obviously -- but it has to be directional, and incremental, and focused. Congress has to first relearn how to "play nice" before it can actually solve our many, many problems. We need Hillary as President -- no matter how much some individuals may dislike her (because of Bill? because she is smart? because she is strong?).

Savannah Sass

What is a typical "Savannah Girl" like -- well, I can sure tell you a lot about this particular query.  Using my "surrogate daughter" as a partial example I can say that she is: confident but internally panicked; flirtatious to a strong degree yet apparently totally oblivious to her own needs; smart but achingly dumb about some things; willing to be fearless, but ridiculously afraid to fail; beautiful, but aware of every physical flaw she possesses!

I have seen so many of these "Savannah-born" women in my life that I have become able to pick them out from any crowd, anywhere, anytime! She is the woman in the bar smoking the small cigar, wearing the tight jeans, leading the strongest conversations, and most likely to go home late -- and probably alone.  She is "loyal" to a fault, and to a guy with many, many faults!  She goes at existence like it was a 2-lb steak, and comes away with her hunger only partially satisfied. She is a creature of pure whimsey, and purer deliberation. She is the classic description: "a beautiful girl with a dirty face."

Renewing a Line of Credit

I have a "personal line of credit, secured by real estate, for $150,000."  Now as I approach renewal time I am trying to determine whether I really need it all.

Is it doing its job to in my tax situation, where my real estate taxes are nearly half of my total salary?
I need to work on this and figure it out.

And the War Drags On...

America has become comfortable with war.  Our volunteer soldiers need the work --- so why not war?

Our politics -- extreme and unyieldingly stupid, reflect the desperation of a "war footing." All our institutions are suffering because we are at war: infrastructure, education, entertainment, hopes and dreams, families, sexual mores, you-name-it: everything is suffering and somehow getting worse.

War is current and forever, apparently. In Iraq, in Afghanistan, in Somalia, everywhere in the Middle East -- and on city streets throughout the USA. Some say we may be at "war with ourselves"-- unable to pick the civilized path because we have forgotten how to be civilized. It is an ornament of the past.

Soldiers suffer, their families suffer, society suffers, the refugees suffer, criminals suffer, the system suffers and strains, we all suffer trying to figure things out.

Articulateable

There is a term in educational parlance -- a course must be "articulateable" -- it must be transferable to other colleges or universities to be a "real" course.  The THEA 1101 course I am intending to teach this summer is supremely transferable, and thus, articulateable.

Even though the word is probably a "made-up" kenning kind of word -- it does say something about the state of education in Georgia. Only several dozen courses in the Savannah Tech General Studies Curriculum are transferable -- that is because the college/university system and the technical college system are "walled apart" by ignorance, stupidity, and bad leadership.

The colleges/universities are unwilling to give up their fiefdom to others. And even if the course in question is taught at the same level and by a teacher who could be teaching on the c/t level; it is considered somehow, lesser. Georgia will always be "backward" as far as education goes. It will all be constricting rather than fulsome.

Sex Blog

When you are an older gentleman like I am --- a "sex blog" is not a very scandalous thing; it is more of an "observation" than an activity. Here is my observation: spring brings out "flirtation" in young coeds, even towards "senior (ahem)" faculty types like me. For some reason the warm weather and pollen overdoses outside have brought out the honeybee-coeds in droves.

Young women (who are not even in my class(es) anymore) are stopping by to talk to me, to tell me cute stories, or to even confide in me. It's a refreshing and somewhat bedazzling experience for me -- after all I haven't been "seriously flirted with in at least 5 years."  So what's up? Global warming? Strange new pollens or microbes in the air? Nano-pheromones?

Actually it is probably just that the "kindly older gentleman" I have become makes me a "soft target"-- a good "practice target" for when the flirtation game really gets going. Summer and the "beach" are to come!

Paris our Heart; Belgium our Soul

We in America really do understand the horrors of Brussels -- the attacks by ISIS zealots is confounding, and horrible. The loss of life incurred by such "insane" religious activity is maddening.

When will the world learn? When will Islam learn -- that violence and jihad is not the "way of God"--
it is the way of stupidity; the way of closed-in men.  ISIS must be destroyed because it is consummately evil; it is definitively inhuman; it is totally wrong!

School is Back in Session

More students absent today than typically -- not unexpected given the school's new lax policy on absenteeism.  Not having an absence policy (due to Federal funding guidance) is not the same as having educational policies that require students to do their work -- and succeed on all levels to learn, and get good grades.

The lack of "ethos" authority on behalf of our administration, now is seen as the generalized school policy, and subsequently the teachers' attitude -- "we just don't care if you are present or not!" This is an ultimate falsehood built upon an administrative boondoggle!

Trump, Riots, Coup d'etat?

Trump no slyly suggests that if he "gets close" to a nomination -- he should "have the nomination" or "there would be 'riots' or something!'  Trump is a pandering and Machiavellian manipulator of the "redneck" army he commands!

All those "redneck" and "white trash"  blue collar (?) morons he leads will follow his "lead" and cause the very riots he suggests might happen!  Once again Trump is using a tangible "fear" to espouse his candidacy; and even his presidency!

Are we all too "stupid" not to understand? Trump will "do anything" to get what he wants -- and that "what" is his own personal power!

Days of Infamy are Upon Us

Nope, not talking about the American Presidential election! Not talking about Spring Weather either! Am talking about the annual malaise known as St. Patrick's Day in Savannah, Georgia.

Because the day is not really about celebrating St. Patrick, or Irish families, or Irish pseudo-political groups (Sinn Fein anyone)?: it is about "alcohol" and the massive consumption thereof.

People will start drinking before dawn tomorrow, and will not stop until they cannot walk; they cannot see; or they cannot do anything at all.  The Savannah Georgia version of St. Patrick's Day is not a celebration but a farce!

Trump, the New American Dictator, Has No Clothes

So today is a huge day in the election nominating process. It will mark the moment either: that Trump dives headlong into the nomination, or Kasich stops Trump in Ohio and throws the election into a "convention fight" in Cleveland this Fall, or Rubio actually wins Florida (and Cruz wins Illinois, and Kasich wins Ohio)--- and Trump is "gone"!

But Trump has already tarnished the American political process -- his trenchant and unrestrained pleas for violence have undone America's reputation for fairness and justice. He is a "game of thrones" political nightmare for the US! His "business" tactics are not tactics at all, but selfish and egotistical reflections of his own self-image. Trump is not a titan or a demigod -- he is a frail and imperfect blot on the mirror that is America.

Spring Lethargy

It's the pollen! Or it's the "annual Spring Cold!"  Or it's the sun and daylight savings time!  Or it's the need to do the "annual spring cleaning!"  Or its the "need for a 'spring tonic'"!  Or it's something else!

But there is no denying it is here!  You can't really get enough sleep and you can't fall asleep completely when you are in bed! Or it's something else! Something else...? But what is it?

The lethargy that creeps into one's bones is palpable. You can feel it when you try to move quickly, or at least more quickly than usual. You can feel it when you try to figure something out, and you can't even begin the thought process about "what you were going to try and figure out!" Human beings really are pathetic little creatures -- yes? Free will but no will!  Lusty but lazy! Hell bent for leather yet dried out completely!

How have we possibly made it this long? Divine "luck"?

Last Day for Awhile

I am facing my last class on the last day before a ten-day Spring Break in my work at Savannah Technical College.  It's like a miracle that it has finally arrived. It has been long in coming.

This weekend is also the arrival of Daylight Savings Time hereabouts, which will change and affect everyone's "circadian rhythm" as usual. I am anxious to "really get into Spring." I need to. I want to.

Interlochen Arts Academy

Spent a few moments online today looking at Crescendo, the online magazine for all things Interlochen: Students, Alumni, Motifs, Honors, Byron Hanson's excerpts from the Archives!  What a marvelous experience it was for me as a teacher, a mentor, an employee, and an emerging artist!

Perhaps I was never able to achieve the "real world" artistry of a Linda Hunt, or even a Richard Brooks -- but I was still able to set my own artistic course, achieve where and when I could, and help others to do the same. I did a lot of "acting" after my time teaching (and learning) at IAA -- and won some subsequent honors in teaching, scholarship, and even in the arts.  But for me as a person -- success was never to be measured in awards or honors!

Success is living an artistic life:  full of wonder, and love, and value! And that I have done. Interlochen, its brilliant students, the engaging and talented colleagues, the fondest memories of success and of failure -- always cleanse and sharpen my thoughts about everything I do now. I am no prisoner of "nostalgia;" I am a "creature of the future." What is tomorrow's gambit? What shall we do -- when we grow up?

Beauty

Is. Beauty is. It exists in nature. It exists in the perfect imperfections of the human form. It exists in nature. It exists in the "mistakes" of nature. Beauty is... because there " is" an 'is.'

Beauty welcomes us every day with its smiles, and with its gentle movements. It "waves" hello and bids "good bye" just by its own "walk-in-stance."

Beauty is human. It is the human form of life. It is what it is.

Better, Better, Still Sick

Lots of "endings" happening right now -- half term is over; course assignments and mid's are over, time before vacation is down to a simple day of two.

The weather is finally warming up some. And that means that life is going to get busier and busier no matter what.

Sick, Sick, Sick

So, I caught a cold last Thursday and could not shake it even after 5 days.  My stomach muscles hurt from coughing so much -- and I just feel "tentative, tentative!"

Guess I was rundown last week and then tried to do too much on Friday (doing an "observation") of a fellow faculty member, etc. I slept pretty much all the time after that but still didn't make any headway.

I now need the more "serious" drugs to help my body recover from this killed cold.

Home Repair Begun (in Earnest)

This weekend my realtor wanted to show my house again -- it just was not possible.  One room cleared out; furniture displaced to all other rooms; 2nd and 3rd floor closed up due to plaster dust -- and still lots, lots, lots to do.

And, I have a cold to boot.

Intrumpsanity

Those poor deranged Americans who think voting for Trump is "some kind of protest against the government" or is actually a "good thing" for American foreign policy, immigration policy, domestic policy, etc. -- please turn in your "human" cards!!!!!

Trump is a huckster, a con man, a bad salesman (thing "bad Santa") but even more than that, he is a threat to civilized society -- inspiring violence, hatred, separation of people (races, ethnic groups, etc)., anger, "snap" judgments (mostly wrong), and inane justifications. He is not a liberal -- he is so much worse: he is not anything! Show him the door -- support anyone else; we cannot survive such a man as our leader.

Donald Trump, the New Messiah

All you KKK members, you Final Days folks, you "redneck" morons, you racist slime, you misogynistic Neanderthals, you anti-intellectual morons, you drunken NASCAR freaks, you
crazy Johnnie Reb holdovers, you anti-government anti-everything "true Americans," -- here is your New Messiah: Donald Trump.

Donald Trump, Racist Business Mogul (Dictator)

If the public at large is dumb enough, or selfish enough, or "sick" enough to elect Donald Trump the entire country will be diminished. He is a self-declared "winner"; and self-satisfied "successful businessman"; and a disgusting blemish on statesmanship, politics, logic, and the American ethos.

If he wins -- we should all "go to Canada" and leave him alone in his "wealth." He is not representative of the way Americans think or feel.  He is the product of Republican right-wing racism and obstructionism; he has set himself up as the "cure" for Obama's presidency. Thank God that Hillary Clinton is in the race as well -- she must win; for all of our sakes.

Donald Trump, Loser

He will lose the Presidency, even after he gains the nomination. His Party will "lose" him by coming close to self-destructing in a "change or die" scenario at the Republican National Convention later this year.

He will lose his business career after this abortive run for the Presidency, riding on the twin steeds of arrogance and ignorance. He is as doomed as a human being can be, rich or not. He is the laughing neon sign in the window of his own superficiality. He is Donald Trump.
